Violent crime is a significant problem in the Northern District of Alabama. One of the larger cities in our District is Anniston. Members of the law enforcement community and government officials in Anniston wish to combat the violent crime problem there by initiating a Drug Market Intervention (DMI) approach. Therefore, the Northern District of Alabama is seeking assistance from NTTAC to receive DMI training, preferably from the National Network for Safe Communities.

Due to the growth and changing demographics of our municipality - as well as the relatively inexperienced tenure of our supervisors and managers - the Tempe Police Department has recognized a great need to increase the amount of leadership and supervisory training provided to the current and future leaders of our organization.

The Center for Public Safety and Justice (CPSJ), located within the University of Illinois, proposed to work with the University of Memphis to complete a BJA-approved national curriculum on the topic of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training for police professionals. This engagement was subsequently transferred to CNA after the key curriculum developer accepted a position with CNA.

Specifically, APD is requesting Blue Courage training. After ten solid years of exemplary executive police management, APD has reached a fork in the road where we are facing a "socialization" hurdle.

I previewed the Blue Courage Training at a Chief Conference in Arizona and would like to bring the training to my Department. The ideals and philosophies are in line with everything we have been teaching here in the last 2.5 years and I would like to have a formalized program to augment and support what we have already established.

We are facing a problem with both tenured and junior sworn personnel who need a re-commitment to the basic principles of the profession, either due to tenure, lack of maturity, and many other reasons. We have also faced a few recent challenges in decision making regarding off duty actions that have resulted in a lot of bad publicity, reduction in public trust and some good people making poor choices resulting in significant discipline.

Our agency is representing this training request for the law enforcement agencies within our regional association, which includes three counties on the western border of Arizona (Mohave, LaPaz, and Yuma Counties). We would like to host this training for multiple agencies (approx. 20) as we are the central location for our regional academy and association. We would like NTTAC's assistance in providing the training "Blue Courage" to all of our officers over a multiple day format to allow our agencies to cycle our officers through the program.
