Questions?

Submitted by Joselle Shea on

We are facing a problem with both tenured and junior sworn personnel who need a re-commitment to the basic principles of the profession, either due to tenure, lack of maturity, and many other reasons. We have also faced a few recent challenges in decision making regarding off duty actions that have resulted in a lot of bad publicity, reduction in public trust and some good people making poor choices resulting in significant discipline. I see this program as a way to invigorate and re-invigorate our commitment to doing the right thing as individuals, and our agency serving the needs of both the community within our department and the community we serve outside the department.

Please describe the "Other" target setting

We would like to host "Blue Courage" training on behalf of all Yavapai County LE agencies, which includes County, Municipal and Tribal LE. I received permission from and commitment to this training from all agency heads in Yavapai County prior to submitting this request. Yavapai County Sheriff's Office is largely a rural agency, with pockets of urban area. There are two tribal agencies included, and the rest are municipal agencies serving between 5,000-40,000 citizens depending on the agency. The latest census indicates about 212,000 people live in the entire Yavapai County area, and a little less than half of that live in the unincorporated area served by the Sheriff's Office.

How do you anticipate that the requested assistance will address the problems?
Myself and several of the agency heads from Yavapai County LE agencies saw a 3.5 hours executive overview of this training at the Arizona Chiefs of Police Conference last week. The presentation will serve to remind our sworn personnel why they got into this profession, what they as individuals and we as organizations can do better to get through a career as a whole and healthy person, and thereby improve the integrity and sustainability of our organization and the reputation of our profession as a whole.
What type of services does your organization offer?
Please describe what types of "Advocacy" you provide
We have a family violence unit which consists of a Detective, and two civilians. This unit provides a response to the scene of domestic violence and other crimes against women, follows up with them in a week, takes secondary photos, and ensures they are provided with referral to counseling, housing, and other local services available to victims.
