On October 16, 2017, the New York State administering agency (SAA), along with a local stakeholder, reached out to the National Criminal Justice Association (NCJA) to request assistance with a behavioral health data collection project. The team was seeking information about data systems used in other states. On October 18, the NCJA conducted an initial evaluation of TTA needs and provided the corresponding informational materials.

TJSPP Mentors assist tribe with their tribal justice sytem strategic plan. Mentorship consists of communication, phone/conference calls, emails and strategic plan review.

The NCJA initially provided the New Mexico Department of Public Safety (the NM SAA) information about the Byrne JAG Strategic Planning TTA Program at the Institute and Criminal Justice on December 22, 2017 when it interviewed the SAA about the state's Byrne JAG investments as part of the NCJA's biennial survey of Byrne JAG investments. During these interviews, NCJA discussed training and technical assistance options available under the TTA program to help states meet new Byrne JAG strategic planning requirements.

On November 7, 2017, the director of the Mississippi SAA contacted the NCJA by email to discuss local planning challenges, staffing and need for TTA support from the NCJA. The NCJA Program Manager outlined training options available to the state, including onsite facilitation, conducting focus groups, and providing assistance with the development of a survey and review of the state's existing strategic plan. The state submitted their strategic plan for review on this date. On December 12, a planning call was held with the director of the SAA to discuss the status of their work.

On September 25, 2017 the Louisiana SAA contacted the NCJA by email to discuss opportunities and potential coordination with other existing projects. This was a Tier 1 TTA request, which involves a less intensive problem-solving response that includes delivery of information through email, telephone, document dissemination and referral to websites or other resources.

TTA was initiated by the Kansas on September 20, 2017. The NCJA staff and SAA teams discussed local need, resources, and training and technical assistance available under the NCJA Strategic Planning TTA Program to help states meet new JFAA requirements for FY19. The teams also discussed the development of a stakeholder survey to assess priority issues (the NCJA had worked previously with the KS SAA to create, administer and analyze a stakeholder survey). The questionnaire was updated to include the Mental Health Purpose Area (added to the Byrne JAG solicitation in FY17).

On November 14, 2017, the Idaho SAA reached out to the NCJA Director of Government Affairs to discuss local needs. The NCJA Program Manager followed up the next day to provide information about the TTA program and services we provide to help states meet the strategic planning requirements under the new Byrne JAG solicitation. The discussion focused on the state's needs and ways in which the TTA program can support the SAA's efforts to develop a comprehensive plan.

Following several occasions in late 2017 where the NCJA provided information about training and technical assistance available to under the new Strategic Planning TTA Program to help states meet new Byrne JAG strategic planning requirements, the Hawaii Crime Prevention and Justice Assistance Division (the state's SAA) contacted the NCJA Program Manager to request strategic planning TTA.
