The NRTAC team provided two onsite training sessions—one on firearms identification and one on interviewing suspects in a crime gun investigation—for investigators from law enforcement agencies throughout Connecticut. Subject matter experts Mark Kraft and Joshua May delivered the content. The training informed attendees how to identify a firearm for accurate trace results and how crime gun intelligence can be leveraged to effectively interview suspects in a crime gun investigation.

Two North Charleston, South Carolina attendees attended a peer exchange to visit the Camden, New Jersey Police Department (CCPD). The CCPD provided a history of its department, discussing how the Camden Police Department was dissolved and the CCPD took over all police operations for the city. The CCPD discussed its use-of-force policy, including its seven guiding principles. Much focus was placed on de-escalation, including the CCPD’s agencywide training on its Critical Decision-Making (CDM) model and Integrating Communications Assessments and Tactics (ICAT) Course.

During this three-day peer exchange, three Aurora Police Department personnel visited the Baltimore Police Department (BPD). The primary focus of this exchange was how to leverage crime analysis and technology to support consent decree compliance.

The Amarillo, Texas Police Department (APD) hosted six PSP site attendees for a 1-day peer exchange. Common themes included how the APD staffs its real-time crime center (which the APD calls the Amarillo Regional Crime Center, or ARCC), the ARCC’s core functions, and how the ARCC relates to other processes, such as traditional crime analysis.

The objective of this project are two-fold: (1) to create a pilot program to establish a rigorous academic-based training model that can be used nationwide for the rapid analysis of suspected illicit drugs seized in the field and (2) to provide training to law enforcement officers on methods to conduct rapid testing on suspected drugs encountered in the field; how to properly collect, document, and store evidence; and risk mitigation strategies focused on officer safety.
