The Project Safe Neighborhoods Training and Technical Assistance team hosted an 8-hour online training for 60 attendees focused on understanding the importance of trauma-informed policing and vicarious trauma, and also bringing awareness to self-care and resiliency. This training will be led by the National Center for Victims of Crime.

BJA requested assistance with facilitating a focus group on hate crimes. Chief Louis M. Dekmar was selected to fulfill this request and facilitated the Hate Crimes Focus Group in July 2021.

NCVC hosted an online webinar focused on Providing Trauma-Informed Death Notifications. In this training, Staci Beers, Victim Services Coordinator, FBI, presented best practices to perform a trauma-informed and compassionate approach to death notification and possible crisis reactions by survivors. This four-hour training included; best strategies to give compassionate and trauma-informed death notifications, interactive scenarios, and information on different referrals and services in Cleveland, Ohio.

In July of 2020, we conducted a gap analysis to help the Cleveland Homicide Review Commission and its Service Provider Review improve the services
provided to victims and witnesses throughout (and beyond) homicide cases. We released a corresponding report, the Northern Ohio Violent Crime Consortium
report. One significant finding in the report is that there exists a lack of funding for relocating crime victims and witnesses, which lead to this brief.

This training initially was developed for the Ohio-N PSN site who was experiencing issues with victim and witness intimidation. This training provided law enforcement with an overview of victim-witness intimidation and provide a victim-centered approach to interviewing and responding to witnesses. Through conversation with other sites, hearing their issues with victim/witness intimidation, NCVC decided to conduct a national training on Trauma-Informed Law Enforcement Strategies for Combating Victim, Witness, and Community Intimidation and Retaliation.

As part of the Department of Justice (DOJ) Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Project, Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) program, CNA’s Center for Justice Research and Analysis (CNA) and NCVC provided a victim services assessment for the Washington West PSN District. The US Attorney’s Office (USAO) requested the victim services assessment for the Western District of Washington in conjunction with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office (KCPAO).

As part of the Department of Justice (DOJ) Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) program, CNA and NCVC provided a victim services assessment for the Fort Pierce Police Department (FPPD) in Fort Pierce, Florida. The victim services assessment was requested through the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida in coordination with the FPPD.

Description: The PSN TTA team is hosting a virtual training for the AL-N PSN team focused on
improving trauma-informed justice system responses and the intersection of firearms and domestic
violence (DV) in Jefferson County. This training will be led by the National Center for Victims of Crime and
the CNA Institute for Public Research.
This training will develop attendees’:
1. understanding of the importance of interagency partnerships for successful prosecution of DV
cases, including the value of partnerships between federal and local agencies;
