NRTAC subject matter experts Joshua May and Jessica Ellefritz conducted a site assessment of the Austin Police Department (APD) Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC) on June 5-6, 2023. Mr. May and Ms. Ellefritz conducted interviews with individual members of the CGIC according to their roles in the CGIC workflow. The team interviewed individuals involved in steps two through five of the CGIC process, including evidence recovery and processing, NIBIN entry, investigation, analysis, performance measure tracking, and criminal justice stakeholder collaboration.

The NRTAC staff visited the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office local CGIC. NRTAC staff interviewed individual members of the CGIC according to their role in the CGIC workflow. The team interviewed individuals involved in every stage of the CGIC process, including evidence recovery and processing, NIBIN entry, investigation, analysis, prosecution, and performance measure tracking.

The NRTAC staff visited the Puerto Rico Institute of Forensic Sciences local CGIC. NRTAC staff interviewed individual members of the CGIC according to their role in the CGIC workflow. The team interviewed individuals involved in every stage of the CGIC process, including evidence recovery and processing, NIBIN entry, investigation, analysis, prosecution, and performance measure tracking.

The NRTAC team helped facilitate a peer-to-peer engagement between the Tucson, (AZ) Police Department (TPD) and the Cincinnati (OH) Police Department (CPD) CGICs, during which CPD gave TPD an all-encompassing site tour. The purpose of the site visit was to give the TPD CGIC an in-depth understanding of the strategies and resources implemented by the CPD CGIC to effectively employ the CGIC model and procedures to improve clearance rates.

The NRTAC team provided four onsite training sessions on Firearms Identification and Crime Gun Intelligence Exploitation for the Chicago (IL) Police Department, with subject matter expert Mark Kraft delivering the content. The training informed attendees about how to identify a firearm for accurate trace results and how crime gun intelligence can be used to investigate and prosecute NIBIN-related cases.

Taking advantage of being in Florida for the St. Petersburg CGIC site assessment on February 27-28, 2024, the NRTAC staff conducted a follow-up site visit to the Ft. Lauderdale CGIC on February 29, 2024. The purpose of the visit was to engage with key stakeholders and new leaders assigned to the Ft. Lauderdale CGIC and inform them of their obligations regarding their CGIC grant. The NRTAC team also reviewed current CGIC processes to identify areas for improvement and inform Ft. Lauderdale Police Department leadership of how to best address them.
