Opportunity for agencies to engage with subject-matter experts and peers to discuss current practices in contraband cellphone interdiction and exchange insights.
The team was invited by the American Correctional Association to deliver a presentation on contraband cellphone-related challenges and the latest developments to combat these at their summer conference in August 2024. The presentation was well-attended by correctional practitioners in the US and other countries, researchers, and students. Attendees were offered an opportunity for in-person light touch TTA following the presentation, with several practitioners meeting with members of the project team regarding questions about interdiction practices and technology implementation.
Two Aurora PSP site representatives and one Rochester representative attended the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) 2024 Public Safety Symposium. This symposium convened a diverse group of those involved in public safety efforts around the country, including police, prosecutors, community supervision, crime analysts, researchers, community members, and criminal justice practitioners. During the 4-day symposium, attendees discussed innovative public safety initiatives, evidence-based violence reduction practices, and other contemporary criminal justice topics.
Document implementation lessons learned to advance the state of knowledge about what works and how it works, including advancing the understanding of SCF principles in practice and lessons learned by BJA grantee and non-grantee jurisdictions.
To fund speakers to present at the Louisiana conference as part of the Adult Treatment Court Initiative (ATCTI).
Wellness Court Specialist Angie Juarez-Monger presented the newly developed TLPI veteran infographic, "Models for Integrating Veterans' Services with Tribal healing to Wellness Courts" at the 2024 NAIJCA National Tribal Judicial and Court Personnel Conference during the Native American Veterans, Veteran Justice Outreach, and Veteran Treatment Courts session.
Outgoing State Drug Court Coordinator, Jeff Kushner, contacted Wellness Court Specialist Kristina Pacheco in late 2023 giving notice of his departure in 2024 and a request to partner with the incoming State Coordinator, Jake Lapke, for the 2024 Montana Treatment Court Conference on September 9-11, 2024 in Helena, Montana. Planning continued with Mr. Lapke and Ms. Pacheco and 2 TLPI, Montana-specific consultants; plus 1 additional TLPI consultant presented 4 Tribal sessions:
1. Culture in the Healing to Wellness Court; Kristina Pacheco, Sean Bear, Durand Bear Medicine
BJA has approved April 30 - May 2, 2025 for the Community Justice Conference. Planning is well underway and a draft conference agenda has been sent to BJA. During this reporting period, a venue was selected, a registration link was created, a media plan was created, and speakers began to be engaged. There is substantial support from across the Center, including at the Executive level, to help curate and execute a meaningful and engaging conference in 2025.
At BJA’s request, Alan Hughes and Sarah Vanselow from the NRTAC team attended BJA’s Violent Crime Reduction Summit in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Additionally, NPI set up an exhibition booth which highlighted the work of NRTAC and available resources to attending agencies.
The 2023 Police, Treatment, and Community (PTACC) Deflection and Pre-Arrest Diversion Training Summit was held in Seattle, Washington on October 28-November 1, 2024. Over 400 people attended the summit, including COSSUP grantees. Attendees and presenters included law enforcement officers and other first responders, behavioral health practitioners, community-based service providers, deflection program managers, researchers, and officials from the local, state, and national levels.
