The Law Enforcement/First Responder Diversion and Referral Mentoring Initiative provides communities interested in starting diversion or referral programs the opportunity to learn from established or innovative programs that have shown success in meeting the treatment needs of individuals with a substance use disorder, and in some cases an overdose. Seven sites have been chosen to act as mentors for newer programs that are trying to establish a first responder diversion program.

Following onsite training with the San Luis Valley in March, the original requestor asked CHJ to help facilitate a call to reconvene the group to discuss the training and opportunities for future collaboration. The convening was held 6/2/23. Key themes from the March training were presented, as well as updates in the community of relevant changes or initiatives that had been started (including participating in a mentoring initiative opportunity through COSSUP).

9/30 Intro Meeting with New Bedford site and CHJ & AHP staff. New Bedford stated that post-overdose is their focus and that they have a diversion program named LEAD (a variation of the national model). This Official team started in 2015 – with clergy, police officers, harm reduction personnel. New Bedford recently implemented a mental health component and would like more resources on this training. Co-occurring component is something new to their team – would want more knowledge on this.
