The IACP CTI project team facilitated a virtual peer exchange between the Boston Police Department and the Baltimore County Police Department. This peer exchange was to garner more information on BCoPD’s Safe Space Initiative, an initiative with the goal of furthering the safety and welfare of LGBTQ+ county residents. BPD is interested in implementing a similar initiative, and this TA request will allow them to learn about how BCoPD created the Safe Space Initiative, how it was received by the community and department, and any key considerations.

CJI is conducting a comprehensive system assessment of North Dakota's criminal justice system. As part of this assessment, CJI data scientists are analyzing quantitative data from the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and from the Court system. This information will be presented to the Working Group in two presentations and will be included alongside qualitative data in CJI's final report.

Staffing shortages have significantly impacted correctional agencies in recent years, including community supervision agencies. Addressing the consequences resulting from frequent staff turnover have been challenging for agency leaders. This workshop will explore turnover trends, hiring, onboarding and staff retention issues, including the needs of both new and seasoned staff. Innovative hiring plans, practical and non-monetary approaches to staff retention, and strategies for managing an agency’s workload when staff resources are strained will be discussed.

Women and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people are the fastest-growing segment of the criminal justice population, and they often experience unique challenges during reintegration that can impact their well-being and success on post-release supervision. Addressing this population’s often-overlooked needs requires understanding and collaboration between paroling authorities and their community supervision partners to identify and provide necessary resources and support.

The NCORJ funded two speakers to participate in a one-day panel discussion entitled "Justice Through a Queer Lens: The Criminal Legal System, Restorative Justice, and Liberation," hosted by the University of California San Francisco Law School. The panel featured LGBTQ+ restorative and transformative justice practitioners grappling with ideas of justice, the criminal legal system, transformation and restorative justice from queer perspectives.
