Women and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people are the fastest-growing segment of the criminal justice population, and they often experience unique challenges during reintegration that can impact their well-being and success on post-release supervision. Addressing this population’s often-overlooked needs requires understanding and collaboration between paroling authorities and their community supervision partners to identify and provide necessary resources and support. This workshop will provide important information about how the needs of women and LGBTI people differ from those of men and how addressing these needs throughout the parole release and supervision process with a trauma-informed approach can help improve parole supervision outcomes. Particular focus will be placed on condition-setting and working with community supervision agencies to develop and allow for gender-based supervision strategies that incentivize and promote success.
