With high rates of crime and victimization, tribal communities suffer disproportionately from the long-lasting and multi-generational impacts of exposure to violence. By restoring tribal court jurisdiction over non-Indians who commit acts of dating and domestic violence on tribal lands, the 2013 reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) renewed the focus on domestic violence in Indian country and the needs of tribal victims.

This webinar will focus on current perspectives related to tribal SORNA implementation. The first part of the presentation will focus on the perspective of the federal agency, the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART Office), charged with assisting SORNA jurisdictions with implementation.

This conference is focused on providing Alaska Tribal Justice Systems with information children’s cases, domestic violence, and misdemeanor/juvenile cases. There is an emphasis on restorative justice and sentencing circles. One other component of the training is improving tribal-state relations. This conference is intended to provide information to tribes just beginning tribal court development, for tribes that want to enhance or make modifications to their courts, as well as for tribes pursuing on-going tribal court training.

This educational course was developed to provide the most targeted training needed in Alaska Tribal courts, from court administration issues to case management. There are separate tracks for the judges and court administrators/court clerks to be able to target specific needs for each job.

Tribes seeking to develop or amend codes will benefit from attending this course. In order to adapt to recent and future changes in federal law, tribes need to incorporate flexibility within their codes. The course will address fundamental steps that should be taken when developing or amending the tribe’s current code as it focuses on many areas of law generally, such as sentencing, probate, elder protection, child protection, environmental, business, mental health and other topics.

TTA Request Summery: Collaborative strategies for the NCJA/NCAI project will involve seeking concurrent jurisdiction with the State of Alaska in the prosecution of criminal court cases; KIT will additionally seek to engage state and local governments in a therapeutic drug court work group. This work group will work to establish action steps towards the creation of a KIT therapeutic drug court model that can be replicated by other tribal courts across the state of Alaska.

The Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association submitted a TA Request for assistance to support their Substance Abuse Summit. NCJTC provided 8 scholarships for travel and lodging and two workshop faculty that provided expertise around substance abuse, trauma informed care and justice system planning.

On May 19th 2014, NCJA and NCAI released an Intergovernmental Collaboration and Justice Capacity Building Project RFP. This RFP was followed by a webinar to help provide the field with guidance and answer questions from attendees. The webinar took place on June 5th and was attended by 33 people, the recording was viewed 16 times.
