Tribes seeking to develop or amend codes will benefit from attending this course. In order to adapt to recent and future changes in federal law, tribes need to incorporate flexibility within their codes. The course will address fundamental steps that should be taken when developing or amending the tribe’s current code as it focuses on many areas of law generally, such as sentencing, probate, elder protection, child protection, environmental, business, mental health and other topics. The tribal work group that will participate in code amendments may include community leaders, code amendment committee members from the community, court clerks, tribal attorneys, tribal judges, advocates, and other key personnel. This course will provide the participants with tools needed to make informed decisions when creating, or amending existing codes. After this course, participants will be able to: identify key issues to address when drafting or amending tribal codes; describe ways they can to involve and/or gain the support of community members when drafting or amending tribal codes; and determine how to prioritize which codes to amend or draft first.
