It is undeniable that in some communities distrust exists between minority populations and state or local law enforcement. Historic tension between police and community members can be particularly palpable in Indian Country, which has spurred some jurisdictions to transform their approach to public safety by emphasizing relationship building with Native communities. These collaborations are changing attitudes, building trust, and forming mutual respect between policing agencies and their community members.

When risk factors affect the health, safety and quality of life; it takes a community response to positively impact change. Successful IASAP planning requires interagency cooperation and community member involvement. Interagency cooperation and community involvement in problem identification and development of effective strategies are significant for making changes and improvements. This training is designed to help executive teams develop and implement comprehensive interagency action plans based on community needs.

Creating and maintaining safe communities requires collaboration to develop strategies that effectively address public safety concerns such as alcohol and substance abuse, child abuse, juvenile delinquency, domestic violence, crime and other threats. The Regional Community Safety Summits will discuss key public safety issues impacting tribal communities and how these concerns can be addressed through community policing, interagency collaboration, and multi-jurisdictional partnerships.

The National Tribal Judicial Center at The National Judicial College awards financial assistance to judges and other court service professionals from tribal courts to enable them to receive continuing education to improve their tribal justice systems.

Sessions included options for incorporating traditional programs, services and practices; court planning that is centered on custom and tradition; bringing peacemaking to tribal courts, and a view from the field where tribes have implemented custom and tradition into their justice systems.

The WI, MN, MI State and Tribal Judges Forum provided an opportunity for Judges to share best practices and network. The Judges from Michigan spent lunch discussing the morning session presented by Minnesota Judges and how Michigan could integrate similar programming. Having a venue to share, network, and discuss enhancements is crucial to the justice system.
