It is undeniable that in some communities distrust exists between minority populations and state or local law enforcement. Historic tension between police and community members can be particularly palpable in Indian Country, which has spurred some jurisdictions to transform their approach to public safety by emphasizing relationship building with Native communities. These collaborations are changing attitudes, building trust, and forming mutual respect between policing agencies and their community members.
Improving Community Relations among Tribal, State, and Local Law Enforcement will explore several such partnerships, discuss challenges, and offer recommendations for overcoming barriers to collaboration. This will be an interactive session with opportunities for participants to discuss and ask questions of the presenters.
Presenters:
• Kevin Mariano, Chief, Isleta Police Department
• TBD: Someone from State of NM, DPS (Kevin to ID)
• Bill Denke, Chief, Sycuan Tribal Police Department
Moderator:
• Brian Kauffman, Executive Director, Western Community Policing Institute
