This webinar will provide an overview of the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 Intellectual Property Enforcement Program: Protecting Public Health, Safety, and the Economy from Counterfeit Goods and Product Piracy solicitation. This program assists state, local, and tribal jurisdictions in preventing and reducing intellectual property (IP) theft and related crime. It is designed to improve the capacity of criminal justice systems to address IP enforcement, including prosecution, prevention, and training and technical assistance. The presenter will provide the criteria for this solicitation and what items are approved for funding and what items are not allowed. The presenter will also provide an overview of the peer review process, the required partnerships, and the reporting process. The attendees will be able to ask questions.

Courts can have a positive impact on families affected by the opioid crisis, but traditionally that role has been reactive, occurring after a dependency petition is filed. Increasing reports of maltreatment due to substance use disorders in conjunction with more children entering an overburdened foster care system can produce poor outcomes for children and families. Serving the needs of children and families affected by substance use and misuse can be proactive.

Join the National Center for State Courts for their upcoming webinar “Strengthening Families: What Role Can Courts Play in Upstream Family Preservation?” on February 4, 2021 at 4:00–5:00 p.m. ET. This webinar will focus on helping courts strengthen their collaborative community roles to help at-risk families affected by the opioid crisis and substance use disorders prior to a petition or child welfare involvement. These preventative, upstream measures can decrease the negative impact on children and help families stay together.

AEquitas, a Bureau of Justice Assistance training and technical assistance provider, recently published their webinar “Achieving Justice: The Prosecutor’s Role” as part of their Just Exits for Survivors of Exploitation initiative.

This web event, hosted by the National Law Enforcement Roadway Safety Program (NLERSP) under the Bureau of Justice Assistance VALOR Initiative, will discuss trends in officer injuries and fatalities from roadway-related incidents, provide a detailed case study of an officer struck-by incident, including lessons learned, and identify numerous resources available for patrol officers and agency decision-makers, alike, to reduce risk and improve officer safety on the road.

In October 2020, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, together with their partners Association of Prosecuting Attorneys, National Center for State Courts, and RTI International, launched the Strengthening the Sixth website (https://strengthenthesixth.org/). The website offers helpful information about the application of the Sixth Amendment along with various carefully curated resources.

The presentation will focus on skills an individual can use to work toward improving or maintaining health and wellness. Mindfulness, breathing exercises, nutrition, mental vacations, music, yoga, and other strategies will be discussed. In addition, the benefits of talk therapy and common misconceptions regarding therapy, confidentiality, and payment options will be explored. Finally, the presenters will discuss ways wellness can be introduced to an officers' family and support system, and how increased knowledge surrounding this topic can be beneficial to all.
