During this interactive group learning session, Second Chance Act Addressing the Needs of Incarcerated Parents and Their Minor Children grantees discussed approaches for engaging caregivers in strengthening relationships between children and their incarcerated parents. Participants discussed key elements for successful outreach, assessing needs, coordinating services, and ongoing support for caregivers of children who have an incarcerated parent.

Deb Wienand and Jeff Shorba, Consultants with the PREA Resource Center conduct a 2-day specialized training for investigators with Bexar County Juvenile Corrections and Bexar County Sheriff’s Departments in San Antonio, Texas. JDI coaches provided support in the development of the grantee's implementation plan and assisted in training curriculum development. Coaches additionally provided assistance with curriculum development.

One video call between the JDI coaches and WVDCR was held in January, and emails continued to be exchanged.
Utilizing monthly phone calls and occasional emails, the JDI coaches provided TA to WVDCR in its PREA implementation efforts. The coaches are offering feedback on a training for supervisors and a refresher training for staff, and assisting WVDCR in interpreting data obtained from staff/prisoner/resident surveys.

The JDI coaches meet with the grantee twice per month and via email and phone as needed to support grant implementation activities and to strategize to overcome challenges. JDI coaches work with both the DOC and OYA on implementation efforts, as both agencies are sub-recipients of the Oregon Criminal Justice Coalition.

JDI Coaches meet monthly with the grantee to discuss implementation efforts and to discuss ways to overcome challenges and for a comprehensive check-in call.
DCDYRS representative, Ms. Fisher will reach out as needed with questions or a request to review a document between checkins.

The LA Probation PREA team was fully engaged with the JDI coaches this grant period. The coaches were able to able to provide assistance by reviewing several trainings for LACPD. The coaches were also able to help facilitate meetings with medical and mental health partners and the PREA team at LACPD.
Additionally, JDI coaches provided sample documents and trainings to LACPD and provided edits to the trainings LACPD developed during this reporting period.

King County was fully engaged with the JDI coaches this reporting period and included both the main contact for the grant, Dawn Breen, and the facility Chief of Operations Lisa Hymes-Davis on calls. The coaches assisted with a review and edits of the staffing plan and of youth education. The coaches have been able to assist King County in the process of applying for a no cost extension as well as in reviewing their plans for staff and youth education.

The assigned coaches at TMG were changed during this review period. The new coach reported that it appears that the grantee maintained regular contact with TMG consultant, Wendy Leach during Q1 2021. Based on the new coaches' conversations with the grantee it seems that she stayed in contact with TMG consultant, Wendy Leach during the quarter. The new coach was not able to identify any PREA implementation assistance or outside TTA that was necessary.
The coach provided the agency with feedback on actions related to PREA standards 115.317 and 115.376 in June 2021.

The assigned coaches at TMG were changed during this review period. The previous coach, Mara Dodson provided a juvenile risk assessment tool review during Q1 2021. No outside TTA appears to have been utilized during the quarter. The newly assigned coach assisted the agency in vetting and selecting their subgrantee for the staffing plan evaluation strategy.
The coach assisted the agency with some questions related to staffing plan implementation and assisted in development of their standards for subgrantee selection related to their staffing plan grant strategy.
