NCCJD Director invited to serve on Vera's committee related to their new project funded by the NoVo Foundation: Coalition to End Violence Against People with Disabilities
NCCJD met in person with leadership staff with SafePlace in Austin, TX to provide input on current projects related to crime victims with disabilities and share ideas for funding related projects.
Kelly Stoner presented information on VAWA Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction over non-Indians.
Kelly Stoner presented information on assisting Indian tribes in developing and promoting state, local, and tribal legislation and policies that enhance best practices for responding to violent crimes against Indian women, including the crimes of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, sex trafficking, and stalking. This included a discussion on VAWA Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction over non-Indians.
Just Detention International was awarded a grant from the Office of Victims of Crime to support use of OVC funds for PREA-related purposes. Michela Bowman and Tara Graham are part of the advisory committee.
NCCJD reviewed this site, which is meant to raise awareness about the problem of abuse against people with disabilities, promote a comprehensive strategy to end it, and connect people working in this area to other people, organizations, and resources. The latter goal is using a searchable map that to find resources. Vera stated NCCJD has amazing resources and a map on our website, and theywould like to work with NCCJD to leverage one another's sites and resources.
NCCJD staff were asked to participate in meeting re: how ACL can best maximize their involvement with Adult Protective Service programs and services. Items for discussion included:
• Strengths, weaknesses, gaps, and needs of the current APS system.
• Priority areas for ACL engagement to improve and enhance APS programs and practices.
• How ACL should structure its work so as to have the maximum impact and benefit for both providers of APS, as well as for individuals who interact with APS.
NTTAC is supporting travel for Lou Longhitano and Theresa Nietzel to the National Sheriffs' Association Winter Conference. The travelers will participate in a workshop on human trafficking on February 6th, 2016.
The Bureau of Justice Assistance requests that BJA NTTAC pay travel expenses for subject matter experts to attend the Witness Intimidation conference.
National Goals 2015 is a unique event and opportunity to summarize the current state of knowledge and identify a platform of national goals in research, practice, and policy in intellectual and developmental disabilities.
