The emerging issues conference will provide tribal justice system officials with recent legal updates impacting tribal courts and tribal justice systems and strategies to improve tribal court operations within tribal justice systems. Some of the topics that will be addressed at this conference will include:
• Impact of Haaland v Brackeen on tribal courts and tribal justice systems.
• Criminal jurisdiction updates to include and examination of Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta and United States v. Cooley.
• Separation of powers for tribal justice systems.

TJI provided faculty to support the intertribal Working Group meeting in June 13-14, 2023 in Scottsdale AZ. TJI personnel presented on the development of tribal codes to address stalking; TJI provided faculty to moderate main sessions on both days of the meeting; and TJI provided faculty on topic of Strengthening offender accountability and intervention

Secondary trauma and victimization aka vicarious victimization isn’t foreign to prosecutors, advocates and staff members. Those feelings of stress, burn out, physical and emotional exhaustion, can and do happen, and often with what seems to be no warning. It’s time to tackle the reality of vicarious victimization with information that will assist in identification, provide tools to help get one through, and ways to build support within agencies.

This webinar will be aimed towards newer capital/complex homicide prosecutors but can serve as a refresher for more seasoned prosecutors as well. The topic will be mitigating mental health defenses. Due to instructor availability and input from the nationwide survey and committee members, we are modifying this webinar from mitigation generally to mental health defense mitigation.

Multiple prosecutors' offices will be visiting the Maricopa County Attorney's Office February 2025. The purpose of this visit will be to exchange ideas on how the Maricopa County Attorney's Office runs their capital case prosecution unit, and provide guidance to newer and more inexperienced prosecutors. This visit was initially set for 2023 but had to be pushed back due to personnel changes within the office.
