Description of the Problem

St. Louis City has a high violence rate. The St. Louis City Circuit Attorney’s Office has been taking steps to address this and will continue to do so. Research suggests the majority of crime can be traced to relatively few individuals. We hope to use social networking analysis to pinpoint who our continual “career” offenders are and who they associate with. This will assist in locating our high crime social networks. Furthermore, a comprehensive analysis of violent social groups in St. Louis may provide valuable information on situations such as retaliatory violence.

How do you anticipate that the requested assistance will address the problems?
Training on the use of Social Networking Analysis would provide the Crime Strategies Unit with technical expertise to appropriately analyze high-risk offenders, violent groups, and gangs in the St. Louis City area. We would be able to establish these networks and keep them up to date as new information is gathered and relationships change. This information would allow the prosecutor’s office to be more proactive than reactive and work alongside the St. Louis City police department to investigate crimes.
