Description of the Problem

The Fox Valley Technical College's Public Safety Training Center located in Appleton, WI respectfully requests grant funds to cover instructional costs for Blue Courage's "The Heart and Mind of the Guardian". The college will recommend the students (officers) who attend pay for the cost of the class materials $95.50 for two days of training; by paying for the materials, the officers will show their level of commitment to the class.
The Public Safety Training Center provides vital hands-on tactical training for students and public safety professionals. In addition to being a training facility for fire, EMS and law enforcement, the center provides various specialized training opportunities for law enforcement officials, including but not limited to K9, Instructor Development, Law Enforcement Instructor, Management and Leadership, Patrol and Crash, In-Service, Computer and Technology, Tactical, Investigations, Forensics and Evidence, Conferences and Seminars and Basic Recruit Academies.
The specialized training opportunities offered at the center are available to local, state, national and federal law enforcement agencies. Therefore, rural agencies to larger metropolitan agencies could send officers to this training opportunity.

How do you anticipate that the requested assistance will address the problems?
Blue Courage is a process focused on the "human development of a police officer". Given the multitude of issues that officers face around the country and specifically here in Wisconsin, now more than ever is the time address the personal and professional challenges officers face such as wellness (physical and mental), their relationships with their family, peers, their administration and the community and their integrity and their commitment to the profession. Officers are provided with tactical training to use their firearm, driving skills to operate a squad at a high rate of speed and training to complete paperwork and citations. Additional emphasis should be placed on their wellness; to take care of themselves and their brothers and sisters in blue. By taking care of themselves and others, officers will be better care takers to those in their community.
