Met with DOC staff managing SRR project to discuss their P&I Guide responses and consider recommendations for their proposal. Also attended a working meeting convened by Secretary Wetzel: As one of only 13 national agencies to be selected as recipient of the Second Chance Recidivism Reduction Planning Grant for the year 2013, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC) is reaching out to fellow statewide agencies in an effort to request support and continued action in fulfilling our common goal: reducing the ongoing problem of recidivism. By working together to plan and implement systemic, cross-agency changes, we can create more seamless, effective means and processes by which to achieve this goal.
In conjunction with a representative from the Governor’s Office and the other agencies who were grant recipients, the DOC had the opportunity to attend a Recidivism Reduction Forum, which was hosted by the Bureau of Justice Assistance in Washington, DC on Thursday, March 27th, 2014. Since then, we are pleased to announce our intention to compete for an even larger implementation grant to be awarded in September 2014. The additional $3 million that this grant provides would contribute greatly to the resources we need to efficiently reduce the number of offenders reentering the justice system.
Accordingly, we will build upon our current, ongoing efforts, such as the Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI) and our Statewide Reentry Strategic Plan, using these to drive our focus on impacting recidivism. The purpose, then, is to provide Pennsylvania agencies and their counterparts the opportunity and funding to support this goal from a cross-agency, systemic review perspective. Together, we can do so by creating viable strategies for the reduction of arrest and incarceration rates, focusing on policy revisions, and maintaining goal-driven implementation planning. To this end, we are requesting that a representative from your agency attend an upcoming meeting at our DOC Central Office building.
