The Ashland, AL Police Department requested assistance from Julie Wartell to assist with implementing the SARA Model and problem-oriented policing (POP). This assistance would include:
1. Scan – identify a crime or quality of life problem as the basis of the project. This would include reviewing 1 year of calls for service and possibly developing a brief
survey for the officers and/or the community.
2. Analyze – once the problem has been identified, assist with data analysis. This would include analysis of the problem through CAD, RMS, and other data sources (with the potential to collect additional data through observations, interviews, and/or surveys).
3. Respond – after the analysis is completed, assist with identifying strategies to reduce the problem and the harms being caused.
4. Assessment – provide a means to evaluate the project and its results
This TTA will assist Ashland implement POP into the Ashland, AL Police Department by supporting the implementation of the first POP-specific effort. Ashland envisions that this project will then allow them to apply the POP principles holistically as a part of the department’s general processes.
