This research will examine young adult competency standards and how they play out in practice. This will include examining whether brain development is a consideration in the development of these policies and practices.
July-December 2022: Completed literature review on competence to stand trial for juveniles and emerging adults and began preparing a statement of the problem document. Conducted 10 interviews with individuals who oversee competency proceedings for juveniles and emerging adults to learn more about their remediation processes.
January - June 2023: Edited and finalized literature review on juvenile and emerging adult competency to stand trial. Drafted brief on juvenile competency to share with roundtable participants. Began planning a series of virtual roundtables focused on competency evaluations, competency remediation, and developmental immaturity with judges, attorneys, court professionals, and psychiatrists in May.
July-Dec. 2023:We launched a 5-part webinar series on October 17, 2023. 700 people registered for the launch webinar. The final content (i.e., modules, role play videos, and workbooks) is housed on NADCL's learning platform. We developed a social media plan to disseminate the 5-part series that will begin on November 7, 2023, and run through December 12, 2023. We also submitted five session proposals to the following conferences:
i. NCJFCJ's 2024 National Conference on Juvenile Justice - March 17 - 20, 2024 in Cleveland, Ohio
ii. NCJFCJ's 87th Annual Conference - July 21-24, 2024 in Phoenix, Arizona
iii. All Rise Annual Training Conference – May 22-25, 2024 in Anaheim, California
iv. NACM Mid-year Conference – February 4-6, 2024 in Costa Mesa, California
v. NACM Annual Conference – July 21-25, 2024 in New Orleans, Louisiana
January-June 2024: This quarter we continued revising the briefing paper with input from subject matter experts.
July -December 2024:Completed final draft of competency brief and awaiting review by subject matter experts. Began discussing the possibility of a webinar series focused on juvenile and adult competency system opportunities for improvement and promising innovations. The team was selected to present on their work at the National Association of County Managers (NACM) conference in July.
