11/1: Video conference with the Sentencing and Proportionality Subcommittee. The subcommittee met to discuss updates to the offender registration requirements and final report of the subcommittee.
11/8: Conference call with Executive Director (Programs and Risk Reduction, KDOC) to discuss the progress that KDOC has made on meeting the recommendations from the 2020 Commission.
11/15: Video Conference call with full Commission. During this meeting of the full Commission, chairs of each subcommittee presented the recommendations put forward to the full Commission to send along to the legislature for consideration during the 2022 legislative session. Five of the six subcommittees were able to review their recommendations and all recommendations were passed unanimously by the voting members of the Commission. 11/16: Conference call with Executive Director of Public Affairs (KDOC) to discuss the Commission and the legislative priorities for KDOC in the upcoming legislative session.
11/17: Conference call with Defense Attorney to discuss stakeholders in the state that she is familiar with that have had a voice in criminal justice work, priorities for the upcoming legislative session for the groups that she is affiliated with, and her interest in her continued participation in JRI implementation efforts.
11/17: Conference call with Director (Riley County Community Corrections) to discuss her reaction the Commission meeting and her plans to stay involved in JRI implementation work.
11/18: Conference call with CEO (Valeo Behavioral Health Care) to discuss the response to the 2020 Commission’s behavioral health recommendations and the progress made.
11/18: Conference call with Professor of Law (Washburn University) to discuss her reaction to the Commission’s recommendations, and to update her on the work that KDOC has been doing to meet the reentry recommendations from the 2020 Commission.
11/18: Video conference of the final meeting of the Race and Criminal Justice Subcommittee to finalize the recommendations for the Commission.
11/18: Video conference call with Director of Crisis Services (Behavioral Health Services Commission, KDADS) to discuss legislative priorities for KDADS, provide an update to KDADS on recommendations from the 2021 Commission that may impact KDADS, and to discuss a possible subaward idea that would involve behavioral health providers in Kansas.
11/18: Video conference call with the Kansas Sentencing Commission. The commission met to discuss Senate Bill 123 recommendations, PSI and journal entry forms, and upcoming meeting dates.
11/18: Conference call with Public Member (Kansas Sentencing Commission) to discuss the general political climate in the state in anticipation of the upcoming legislative session.
11/19: Conference call with Court Services Specialist (OJA) to discuss the work of the Commission, to briefly discuss what technical assistance CSG Justice Center could provide, and if there are any concerns or priorities that OJA has going into the legislative session.
11/22: Video conference call to discuss the sixth subcommittee’s recommendations that were not voted on during the previous meeting. The recommendations passed unanimously.
11/22: Video conference call with Chief of Trial Court Services (OJA) and Court Services Specialist (OJA) to discuss opportunities for training the implementation of new community supervision practices.
12/1: Call with Chairman of the KCJRC (Sedgewick County District Attorney) to discuss the KCJRC final report and strategy to ensure effective implementation of recommendations
12/14: Call with Representative (District 121, Republican) to educate on the KCJRC recommendations.
12/15: Call with Representative (Chair, Judiciary Committee) to educate on the final recommendations made by the KCJRC.
12/15: Call with Representative (District 40, Republican) to educate on the final recommendations made by the KCJRC.
12/15: Call with Deputy Secretary of Juvenile/Adult Community-Based Services (KDOC) to discuss reentry efforts in light of a person on parole supervision being arrested for murder.
12/16: Call with Representative (District 76, Republican) to educate on the final recommendations made by the KCJRC.
12/16: Meeting of the Kansas Sentencing Commission (KSSC) to discuss a Senate Bill 123 study on effectiveness, new video conference technology, the courts need for a new e-filing program, and an upcoming presentation on sentencing trends.
12/17: Call with Senator (District 36, Republican) to educate on the final recommendations made by the KCJRC.
12/17: Call with Director (Americans for Prosperity) and Deputy Director, Americans for Prosperity to discuss potential criminal justice improvements and any challenges their organization has observed.
