This course is for law enforcement investigators, examiners, and analysts, where device location information may be of importance. Class concepts include exploring user attributes, advertising identifiers, geofence returns, important legal considerations and processes, overall investigative process, and tools available to law enforcement. Students will use a commercially available investigative tool for querying an advertising identifier dataset to display signal locations and a freely available investigative tool for visualizing reverse location geofence returns.

This course provides skills to law enforcement officers to conduct online investigations using Darknets, to include Tor, Tails, Freenet, and the Invisible Internet Project (I2P). Topics will include operational security for conducting Darknet investigations, how to setup up a research/undercover computer using Virtual Machines (VMs), Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and Android phone emulators, setting up software for Tor, Tails, Freenet and I2P, researching Dark Markets and understanding how to conduct undercover purchases of items for investigations.

This course provides students with the fundamental knowledge and skills they need to investigate crimes involving virtual currency. Instructors explain foundational concepts like the characteristics of money, virtual currency, and cryptocurrency. Blockchain technology, proof work, and proof of stake are covered; and students learn how industry-leading cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Monero) work and how they differ from each other.
