I am requesting TTA assistance in procuring grant funding for training that builds trust and legitimacy through advanced leadership at the Police Executive Research Forum-Senior Management Institute for Personnel (SMIP). The SMIP is a program that provides senior police executives with intensive training in the latest management concepts and practices in government today. Communities expect more from their police departments in terms of trust and legitimacy, de-escalation strategies, critical thinking, and community engagement.

Stratford Police Department has created and implemented a community policing program over the past ten years. The program is a hybrid of the Police Activities League (PAL) and a Stratford-innovated program, the Police Engagement Program(r) (PEP). PAL hosts year-long programs with K-12 students, ranging from social activities, sports programs and has three separate curricula in the schools, which were approved by the Stratford Board of Education. The Stratford PD also intervenes to provide support when social services are unavailable.

We are currently evaluating the need for an embedded mental health clinician within our agency, but one of our first priorities must be providing training to our law enforcement officers to better equip them with the skills and knowledge to more efficiently handle calls for service involving those with mental illness. We are requesting assistance in providing our officers with CIT training to meet the aforementioned need.
