NACDL is in the process of creating a webinar about facial recognition software – the way it is used by law enforcement, its potential for racial bias, and defenses that might be raised against its use and admission in trial. Currently, NACDL has confirmed Clare Garvie, an associate with Georgetown’s Center for Privacy and Technology, as a speaker for the webinar.

During the January – June 2017 reporting period, DHS, in partnership with BJA, began the development of a guidance document to assist agencies in developing a privacy policy regarding the use of facial recognition information. This project was identified as an area of interest by the CICC. During this reporting period, an initial kickoff call was held, as well as initial research on the issue, and a task team drafting session was held on May 2-3, 2017 in Arlington, VA.
