The Vera Institute of Justice has recently developed a guide to analyzing jail data to better inform impactful policy creation and social change. The guide provides strategies for obtaining quantitative data on jail populations from local government and other sources, definitions of data points generally collected about jail populations, best-practices for prepping data sets for most effective analysis, and suggestions for different types of analysis that could be performed with that data.

The National Law Enforcement Applied Research & Data Platform is an effort facilitated by the National Police Foundation and funded by the National Institute of Justice. This new data-driven platform provides survey data to police agencies at no cost. The data may be used to drive policy decisions, as well as gauge the community’s perspectives on law enforcement.

Data dashboards have become popular because they can be easily explained and interpreted by a variety of users. In some cases, data dashboards allow the end user to manipulate the data and isolate individual variables, allowing further exploration and knowledge building.

On behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Institute for Intergovernmental Research is releasing the Partnerships to Support Data-driven Responses to Emerging Drug Threats Grant solicitation. This is part of a series of demonstration projects funded under the Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Program. These demonstration projects are designed to build capacity, foster cross-sector collaboration, and support innovation. Under this solicitation, up to 6 communities will be selected for grant awards up to $600,000, each for a 24-month period.

In 2017, the Washington/Baltimore High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area launched a free, user-friendly, mobile-capable tool known as the Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program (ODMAP) to track the location of suspected fatal and nonfatal overdoses and the administration of naloxone by first responders. ODMAP provides near real-time suspected overdose data across jurisdictions to support efforts to mobilize an immediate response to a sudden increase or spike in overdose events.
