NACDL is in the process of creating a webinar about facial recognition software – the way it is used by law enforcement, its potential for racial bias, and defenses that might be raised against its use and admission in trial. Currently, NACDL has confirmed Clare Garvie, an associate with Georgetown’s Center for Privacy and Technology, as a speaker for the webinar.

The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) recently published a guide on challenging evidence seized by government-installed computer malware authored by the American Civil Liberties Union with input from NACDL and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The guide, “Challenging Government Hacking in Criminal Cases,” assessed recent court decisions evaluating the government’s use of malware in the context of Fourth Amendment protections from unreasonable searches.

This 3 day program will provide trial skills to institutional defenders and assigned counsel in Pennsylvania, with a focus on defenders in Philadelphia and the surrounding county of Montgomery. Emphasis will be placed on forensic issues that arise in sexual assault cases and will include lectures as well as small group/hands-on work.

This 3 day training will be held in Boise, ID on August 8-10, 2018. Two days will be devoted to lectures, providing training to 150 public defense providers of varied experience levels. The third day will be dedicated to providing hands-on skills work for 50 less experienced public defense attorneys. The training is being done in conjunction with the Idaho State Public Defense Commission

This 3-day training will be held in Boise, Idaho on August 8-10, 2018. It will include 2 days of general lectures for approximately 150 defenders of all experience levels and one day of specialized small group/hands-on training for approximately 50 less experienced defenders. The attendees will include institutional defenders and members of the private bar accepting court appointed cases. We will be partnering with the Idaho State Public Defense Commission.

NACDL will provide training for public defense providers in Indianapolis, IN on March 8-9, 2018. The program title and topics are being decided in cooperation with the Indiana Public Defender Council.
