The Bureau of Justice Assistance requested travel support for representatives from multiple states to attend a meeting of the Regional Judicial Opioid Initiative. BJA NTTAC provided travel support to 10 representatives from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Michigan, who attended the meeting from June 26 - 28, 2017 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
A regional effort is underway with approximately 6 states - the numbers vary from day to day at they solidify their work (Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Michigan and Illinois are the core members) to support regional responses to the opioid epidemic. They call their initiative the Regional Judicial Opioid Initiative or RJOI. This effort is being supported by the chief justices in the respective states (the Ohio Chief Justice was the person behind the effort) but they have broad multi-disciplinary engagement (representation varies by state but they have generally have the state drug court administrator, probation, treatment, the PDMPs and public health engaged). They have met twice, established a committee structure, and BJA and SAMHSA have been involved in their past meetings. They had a large meeting with 10 plus people per state last August and a smaller more focused meeting this past February that was supported by BJA through the PDMP TTA provider.
