The City of Gary, Indiana requested training support under their comprehensive violence prevention strategy work to establish a therapeutic determent program for young black males in their city. Daryl Turpin of the Pinwheel Group was selected to fulfill the request and facilitated the H.E.A.T. train-the-trainer curriculum to 10 community stakeholders on March 20, 2017 in Gary, Indiana.
Although incarceration rates for Black males appear to be on the decline in recent years as compared to other racial and ethnic groups, they continue to represent approximately 45 percent of state prison inmates convicted of drug offenses, despite the fact that they only comprise about 12 percent of the U.S. population and do not evidence any higher rates of involvement in substance abuse than other racial groups. Clearly, if the criminal justice system is to maximize their impact on rates of incarceration, they must find a way to engage young, Black males.
Request from Gary for TTA to support their GARY for Life work (one of the Diagnostic Center's recommendations – comprehensive violence prevention strategy). I recently spoke with Darryl Turpin, the co-principle and founder of HEAT. He has stated cost of Train the Trainer for this programming is $700/per person. We are requesting funding for ten (10) potential trainers. Total cost: $7000.00
