The Center for Court Innovation is supported by BJA to help states assess the impact of changes in criminal sentencing guidelines. In California, the Center will provide technical support to assess the impact of sentencing reforms on drug courts and recommend strategies for adapting to a changing legal environment that has reduced the severity of and punishment for certain drug offenses resulting from the enactment of the Proposition 47 The Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act.

Center for Court Innovation Treatment Court staff and Research Department staff met with representatives of the Operations and Program Division of the Judicial Council of California to develop a technical assistance work plan to conduct a statewide survey on the impact of sentence reform Act Proposition 47, to conduct analysis of the survey results, to process those survey results with state practitioners and members of the California Collaborative Courts Association, and to make recommendations on policy and practice changes for drug court operations.

Center for Court Innovation Treatment Court staff and Research Department staff worked with representatives of the Operations and Program Division of the Judicial Council of California to disseminate the statewide survey on the impact of sentence reform Act Proposition 47, to track survey participation, and to collect information on survey results.
Center staff sent the results of the Sentence Reform Impact Survey to Francine Burn at the end of August, 2016. Francine presented the survey data at the California Collaborative Courts Conference on October 20th and 21st. Center staff are planning to travel to Sacramento, CA on February 17th to do a presentation on the findings of the survey and facilitate a discussion with practitioners about the impact of the results.
In February 2017, Center staff traveled to Sacramento, CA to present results of the sentencing reform project at the California Association of Collaborative Courts Conference. Center staff also conducted interviews for the practitioner monograph.
