We would like to request assistance through the National Training and Technical Assistance Center (NTTAC) to provide on-site training on Trauma Informed Approaches for 50-75 Jefferson County Sherriff’s Department correctional officers and staff.
The Jefferson County Co-Occurring Reentry Program is implemented in conjunction with the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s (UAB) Treatment Alternatives for Safer Communities (TASC), the Jefferson County Jail and several other community resource agencies. The program aims to deliver a comprehensive and systems-integrated approach to improve outcomes for moderate – high risk felony inmates with COD identified in the Jefferson County Jail.
Given the prevalence of trauma among incarcerated populations, we feel it’s vital for correctional officers to receive training to help identify trauma and its symptoms, understand the impact of trauma and learn techniques and strategies to respond effectively to trauma symptoms, deescalate situations and minimize likelihood of re-traumatization.
In 2015, UAB TASC, a partner of the Jefferson County Jail, received training to integrate trauma-informed approaches within agency culture and program operations. Staff received education in trauma-informed care and training to integrate trauma-informed approaches within their specific roles. In order to effect system-wide change, jail administration has expressed interest in offering similar training to correctional officers to begin the process of integrating trauma-informed approaches within their organizational practices and individual roles.
BJA NTTAC successfully referred this request to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
