My police unit is part of a much larger collaborative effort called the Kansas City No Violence Alliance. Kansascitynova.org... We are currently working to implement a Byrne Grant project in a very violent corridor of our city's urban core. Four officers and myself will be working in this corridor with community based organizations to implement a focused deterrence policing strategy and to apply CPTED principles to a commercial corridor revitalization effort. Me, my four officers and a few members of the "Byrne Area" affiliated with community based organizations need to be trained in the CPTED program as soon as possible. The closest training is in Louisville, KY. We would be able to save money by driving to the training location. Our City's training budget has been greatly reduced if not completely eliminated. Any Technical Training Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

How do you anticipate that the requested assistance will address the problems?
One of the primary goals of the four officers working in the violent dilapidated Prospect corridor is to apply CPTED principles to a commercial and residential corridor revitalization effort. The participants will prevent and or curb priority crimes and criminal behaviors by the use of CPTED principles. The participants will establish long lasting, positive effects on preventing and deterring crime by revitalizing both the residential and business sectors. The trained participants will be able to introduce target area beautification process by improving sidewalks, building facades, tree plantation and public space lighting. They will be able to educate property owners to apply CPTED principles to their property design to eliminate or curb the potential for priority crimes on their property. The trained participants will identify the list of multi-housing spaces within the area and partner with the Crime Free Program practitioners within the area in keeping illegal activity out of rental communities, business locations and public storage facilities. Pursue the completion of a master planner housing development on the site of the empty Horace Mann school. Develop a graffiti prevention initiative to combat the presence of criminal activities in the area.
