Throughout the reporting period, Center staff continued to host virtual calls with the sites from the FY22, on an as-needed basis. This included conducting outreach with sites to encourage them to attend a regional convening, responding to their inquiries and keeping them abreast of national developments via the Court-Builders listserv, and providing individual consultations as needed. Some notable TTA instances follow here.
The 92nd District Community Court Program in Luce County welcomed a new court coordinator in January who has continued supporting their efforts to expand their pretrial work and ensure more community members can access services. Due to the transition in staffing, progress on this project has been limited; however, the Center remains committed to engagement and has made continued efforts to connect with the County’s justice partners. Technical assistance was provided on an as needed basis to address immediate needs, including information related to continued care for court participants and screening tools. Despite their change in leadership, Luce has been active on the Center’s Court Builders listserv, which reflects an effort to remain connected to community court practitioners nationwide.
The Paterson Community Court opted to join the Center’s monthly group TA calls with the FY23 grantees and has been actively working toward a full launch. After attending the mentor court site visit in Austin, their case manager quickly took on their first case which was dismissed and expunged. The court successfully convinced the District Attorney’s office to allow walk-ins and voluntary service provision despite the DA’s preference that all cases be triggered by an arrest. A reentry staff member will also now be stationed alongside the case manager to facilitate better collaboration. The director position has been posted with at least one interested candidate. In addition, they plan to hire a new attorney, which should help in building stronger relationships within the community.
In 2024, the Eugene Municipal Community Court continues to serve as a leader in their cohort, including connecting with FY24 grantee Arlington, TX, about their experience of doing a local validation of the CCAT.
Dane County’ staff have been very thoughtful about getting as much relevant information and training as possible. After engaging an outside consultant to provide them with feedback for their upcoming hard launch as a community court to assess the County’s needs, Dane County created a new county-wide office, the Office of Justice Reform. The Director hired to lead that office was the lead planner of the community court program, which was a boon to the community court program and will see positive developments in the coming years.
