On October 9, 2024, members of the SLATT team and two SMEs delivered an in-person training presentation titled, “Terrorism, Targeted Violence and Hate Crimes: Current Threats, and their Connection to Suspicious Activity Reporting.” The two-hour presentation consisted of lessons from the PROTECT course curriculum and was hosted by the Amtrak Police Department as a component of their Field Intelligence Officer Conference, in Wilmington, Delaware. The training event began with a SLATT Program overview followed by homegrown and domestic violent extremism awareness and related topics, including a review and discussion of the current and evolving threat, concepts related to mixed ideologies and grievance-based violence, observable threat indicators as highlighted in the Nationwide Suspicious Activity Reporting Initiative, and the relationship between ideological and grievance-based violence and pre-incident behaviors. At the conclusion of the event, participants were provided with SLATT Program resources and QR codes to download presentation resources and to provide evaluative feedback. Approximately 40 participants attended the conference. Of the eleven attendees who provided feedback, 100 percent found the instructors to be effective and knowledgeable, were satisfied with the course, found the information useful, indicated that their knowledge increased, that the course was relevant to their job, that they plan to apply lessons learned from the training, and that they would recommend the course to others. Attendees appreciated the content related to how the terrorist threat has evolved, with one participant noting that the lessons provided a “good foundation and review of terror threats and precursors,” and another indicating that the “content about indicators was very informative when recognizing the potential for violence.” In addition, a participant stated that “SLATT always does a great job of [providing] unbiased education for the line officer.”
