Summary of successes
The program started in May 2023 and underwent modifications in September 2023.
New peer support specialists are starting on October 1.
Partnership with NAMI of Southern Nevada for referrals.
Established inter-local agreement with the coroner’s office to receive referrals starting in October, focusing on post-overdose deaths and reaching out to families.
Collaboration with the health department treating overdose response like disease investigation.
New building partnerships due to removing law enforcement involvement.
Development of a referral process with the fire department and EMS systems.
Summary of challenges
Chain of command and law enforcement buy in
Few referrals from law enforcement, with minimal input from the Las Vegas Police Department (1-2 per month).
Outreach efforts with the homeless and public response teams have not been as successful as anticipated.
Difficulty in getting IT on board with a case management system.
Messaging shift to a medical model is in progress, but coordination is needed.
