WORKSHOP– Understanding Your Clients: A Discussion on Working with Native American Clients in a Reentry Program. This presentation is based on part 3 of the Reentry Toolkit developed as part of this funding opportunity. This workshop focused on engaging the client in the reentry program by providing information to enhance the attends’ knowledge and skill set to successfully engage clients in their reentry programs. This workshop discussed the importance of conducting intial assessments, and the need for regular re-assessments of program clients to ensure the program continues to identify and address the needs of the clients. Included in this workshop were the challenges assessments that have not been validated among the Native American population, as well as the benefits of using the available assessment, despite their limitations. The attendees of this workshop received information on building collaborative relationships with agencies and organizations to help clients overcome barriers they face re-entering the community following incarceration. The importance of developing peer and community support networks and incorporating traditional and cultural practices into reentry programs was emphasized as a practice that has proven to improve reentry outcomes across Tribal communities.
