The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office (OPSO) continues to struggle and to be in the planning stage. Early in this quarter, Deputy Faggin continued to work with Bernadette Brown to iron out a potential scope of work. Bernadette submitted that scope of work at the end of the last quarter, which details a training and TA plan to increase effective, professional, and respectful communication with LGBTQIA+ people in custody. Deputy Faggin and Bernadette communicated in April about the scope of work, which Deputy Faggin is in favor of. The coach worked with Deputy Faggin to integrate Bernadette's plan into OPSO's implementation plan, and had a call with Major Anthony Giovingo to try to generate a final goal to fill out their plan. Unfortunately, OPSO haven't identified that final goal, so the implementation plan is in a holding pattern. The coach was hopeful that Major Giovingo could be the leadership support that Mr. Lawson and Deputy Faggin need, but he only attended one meeting and didn't provide a clear direction for another PREA goal they could finance with this grant.
In the meantime, OPSO's grant technically expired on 3/31/24. On 9/25/23, the coach sent Mr. Lawson a first email to prompt him to submit a request for a no-cost extension. Then, on 1/22/24, the coach sent detailed instructions and guidance on submitting a request for a no-cost extension after a coaching call where we discussed this as well. During this quarter, the coach talked Mr. Lawson through the steps again, and Ania Dobranska (BJA) emailed him, but to no avail. OPSO has indicated they wanted to keep the grant, but Mr. Lawson appears to be struggling to complete the steps to request a no-cost extension.
