During the April through June 2024 reporting period, under their FY'22 grant, the Washington Department of Corrections (WADOC) continued to work towards their goals. Brydee Rieck, WADOC's Transgender Housing and Program Manager, has been working to review the housing protocols for the transgender population. WADOC hopes to ensure there is a full review for all disclosures, transfers, and moves of anyone who is transgender as these numbers have gone up and the DOC is receiving around 70 requests per month. Despite promises to review these and to work towards moving transgender women to a women's facility, there has been very little move to do so and there has been public outcry about WADOC unfairly removing transgender women from their women's facility. During this reporting period, a team of WADOC staff met with an outside organization, Beyond These Walls, to discuss starting support groups specific for the LGBTI population. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of internal pushback around having formerly incarcerated people facilitate the programs or having outside groups enter in the facilities. WADOC staff wrote and turned in their first report to Disability Rights Washington (DRW) since the settlement was reached. The coaches are hopeful that with the additional oversight provided by the DRW settlement, that WADOC will make more meaningful changes for the transgender population that align with their original goals. WADOC is working to apply for a no-cost extension on their FY'22 grant.
