The NCJA CJP decided to create a board-targeted training based on comments and feedback we were seeing from SAAs and their staff at our other strategic planning trainings. We began the process of creating the curriculum in January by convening a group of NCJA staff members as well as two subject matter experts: Joe Thome (consultant who was a former SAA in CO), and Lori Pesci (consultant who works for the Summitt Co, OH CJCC). As a unit, we brainstormed what the curriculum could look like, and then went through the process of actually developing and streamlining the curriculum through a series of reoccuring meetings. After completing the curriculum, we opened the registration and created a participant pre-survey to gauge what participants most wanted to learn about/get out of the workshop itself, which guided the final steps of refining the curriculum. We completed this training in St. Paul, MN May 29-30, 2024. A description of the training blurb is below:
Do you need help beginning, maintaining or re-evaluating a public safety advisory board? Enhancing Public Safety: Best Practices for Creating High-Performing Boards is designed for State Administering Agencies (SAAs) and the relevant staff responsible for leading and/or managing public safety advisory boards such as Byrne JAG and Byrne SCIP boards and state criminal justice commissions. This opportunity is also available to staff leading and managing local Criminal Justice Coordinating Councils (CJCCs).
Topics include:
• High-level overview of the role, function and structure of a public safety board
• Core values/guiding principles and strategic planning
• Key components of successful boards
• Navigating board culture and expectations
• Beginning (and maintaining) relationships and engagement with key stakeholders
• Navigating common challenges boards may experience, such as changes in management and competition for scarce resources
• Board logistics, including guidance on staff support, minutes and agendas
• Benefits of relationships and trust building
• Leveraging data for improved success
