CJI provided significant support to the Oklahoma Legislature during the 2024 legislative session. This support was primarily: data analysis, legislator education, and research on crime trends in states that have passed justice reinvestment legislation. Oklahoma's legislative session began on February 5th, 2024 and adjourned Sine Die on May 30th. CJI staff traveled to Oklahoma City throughout the legislative session to provide members with information on JRI in Oklahoma and discuss the key findings of the MODERN Justice Task Force. Multiple bills were filed as a result of the Task Force recommendations, and the CJI team supported legislative sponsors with data and material on the filed legislation. CJI met with members of House and Senate Judiciary committees, as well as House and Senate caucuses prior to bill hearings to answer questions related to the data analysis that was used to inform the recommendations from the MODERN Justice Task Force, as well as to speak to the JRI process. CJI staff worked closely with the bill sponsors and held frequent meetings with staff from the Governor's office and the Secretary of Public Safety throughout the session. Additional measures were introduced during the legislative session that would impact the prior JRI efforts that were enacted in 2019. At the request of state leadership, our team engaged, educating legislators and other criminal justice stakeholders on current data. Our team effectively dispelled information and contributed to these efforts stalling. The intended impact of CJI's assistance during the legislative session was to answer questions from senators, explain data and research used to develop policies and provide clarity around the JRI process and CJI's role in the state.
