On April 18, 2024, members of the State and Local Anti-Terrorism Training (SLATT) team provided an in-person Detect & Interdict: Specialized Roles in Uncovering and Preventing Terrorism (DISRUPT) training delivery to members of the Madison, Wisconsin Police Department, Special Events Team (SET). The SLATT training was requested in preparation for the upcoming Republican National Convention, which will be hosted in Milwaukee on July 15–18, 2024. The two-hour SLATT training was hosted at the Madison Police Training Center and consisted of a SLATT Program overview, a current threat overview, the role of state and local law enforcement at First Amendment-protected events, and the SLATT lesson titled “Organized Violent Extremism at Protest-Style Events.”
Approximately 85 law enforcement and criminal justice professionals attended the training event and were provided with SLATT promotional materials, to include a link to additional SLATT resources, and a quick response code to provide evaluative feedback. Of the attendees who provided feedback, one hundred percent of the students were satisfied with the course and agreed or strongly agreed that the information was useful and that it increased their knowledge; 80% agreed or strongly agreed that the course was relevant to their current jobs; and 100% agreed or strongly agreed that they would apply what they had learned and would recommend the course to others. Participants commented that the SLATT presenters were “great, informative, and knowledgeable,” and that they appreciated the “real world case information.”
