July-Dec. 2023 Hawai’i Public Defender Training: NACDL is currently involved in planning a week long training for the Hawai’i Public Defender’s Office. Hawai’i shares the same challenges as many rural communities, isolation (in their case geographic) makes it very difficult for its lawyers to get access to national level training or be exposed to new innovations in the field. The state has one of the lowest per capita spendings on public defense, making it difficult for its lawyers to get access to the skills they need in order to meet the increasing complexities of the practice of criminal defense. Moreover, the state has substantial racial disparities in its criminal legal system that the attorneys feel powerless to redress. Working with Chaminade University’s forensics department and the University of Hawai’i's law school, we have identified free venues for all of our training and developed a working outline for our program’s content. We are currently developing a CCR to submit for conference approval.
Jan- June 2024: Developed a weeklong training conference for their attorney staff; two days in conjunction with the Chaminade University undergraduate forensic science department and three days focusing on client communication, other areas of forensic science and digital technology and defense of serious violence crime cases. Conference will take place Aug 6-10, 2024. Contact person is Eddie Aquino, edward.l.aquino@hawaii.gov website is https://publicdefender.hawaii.gov/.
