In August, CSG Justice Center staff continued to socialize the guidelines and engage key partners in the field, further develop outreach strategies, update language for rolling applications for technical assistance (TA), present at conferences about the guidelines, and identify project next steps.
TA applications for the national guidelines project will be available on a rolling basis. Edits are being finalized to the language and will be shared with BJA for updating.
The presentation draft for the ICJA conference was approved by BJA on August 17 and shared with other presenters.
The presentation draft for the APPA annual conference was approved by BJA on August 25 and shared with APPA. BJA and CSG Justice Center staff held a panel discussion with current TA applicants at the APPA annual conference in August 2023. During this event, CSG Justice Center staff had a chance to meet with a BJA senior policy advisor for Corrections, Reentry and Justice Reform and the rest of the panel?the interstate director for MN DOC, deputy commissioner for field services at Massachusetts Probation Service, and assistant professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale?to discuss current TA, feedback, and next steps.
CSG Justice Center staff continued to identify opportunities and work with partners in the field.
Technical Assistance (TA) States:
Massachusetts Probation Service (MPS)?
On August 2, CSG Justice Center staff met with the deputy commissioner for field services, deputy commissioner of programs at Massachusetts Probation Service, and the president of Policy Research Associates (PRA) to discuss recommendations for the request for proposal (RFP) relating to the revalidation of the ORAS instrument.
On August 9, CSG Justice Center staff met with the deputy commissioner for field services to finalize APPA panel questions and logistics for the conference.
On August 23, CSG Justice Center staff, along with the PRA president, conducted the first virtual working group meeting with the MPS. During the meeting, CSG Justice Center staff provided a review of RFP recommendations for the rest of the working group and discussed any foreseeable challenges with incorporating the recommendations provided to the PRA president. Current and future action items were discussed with an emphasis on establishing focus groups (both external and internal) to begin meeting toward the end of September or beginning of October. Working group meetings for September were also confirmed and scheduled.
Minnesota Department of Corrections (MN DOC), Minnesota Association of Community Corrections Act Counties (MACCAC), and Minnesota Association of County Probation Officers (MACPO)
On August 9, CSG Justice Center staff conducted a meeting with the MN DOC interstate director and the field services director, director of MACCAC for Aitkin County, probation director of MACPO for Otter Tail County, MACPO, and the PRA president to discuss an overview of the?agency?s application materials and self-assessment tool results. The PRA president provided feedback and additional questions regarding the agencies??assessment instruments and validation of those instruments. CSG Justice Center staff presented a brief overview of working group standards and requirements for the agency to finalize the working group members. CSG Justice Center staff also discussed final planning for the upcoming site visit on September 11.
On August 30, CSG Justice Center staff and the MN DOC field services director met to discuss and finalize the site visit agenda for September 11.
New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJ DOC)
In August, CSG Justice Center staff reached out to the director of compliance and strategic planning for the New Jersey Department of Corrections to schedule a call for August with the PRA president, an associate professor of social work at the University of Utah, and director of the Utah Criminal Justice Center to discuss the implementation needs and next steps for NJ DOC. Due to scheduling conflicts, the call was moved to September 5.
