During this reporting period the New Hampshire Department of Corrections (NHDOC) continued work on PREA implementation at their facilities. NHDOC PREA staff were focused on a PREA audit of several of their facilities that occurred in early June for which they were given a corrective action plan. During this reporting period NHDOC implemented their PREA staff training as well as their staff refresher training. The JDI coaches continued to provide recommendations and best practices to NHDOC particularly around the delivery of the PREA education for the incarcerated population as well as around the risk screening tool used at intake. Despite the provided guidance and openness to these conversations in meetings, NHDOC implemented a new screening tool that was only shared with the coaches after implementation that still does not fully assess the risk of the people in their custody, in particular their LGBTI population. As mentioned in previous reports, the coaches feel that while many deliverables outlined under the grant have been completed and they are prepared to close out their grant in September, NHDOC has not followed best practices for creating safer facilities.
