After discussing focus group planning with the New Mexico Sentencing Commission, CJI has begun identifying potential locations and hosts for focus groups, relying on local criminal justice coordinating councils to assist with hosting and invitations. Each focus group will include law enforcement, court system actors, corrections officers, victims, directly impacted individuals, county managers, community supervision officers, behavioral health experts, and tribal liaisons from that specific region. The goals of these focus groups will be to facilitate relationship-building among different stakeholder groups, to identify criminal justice-related challenges specific to the region, and to develop an understanding of stakeholders’ perceptions of local criminal justice reform efforts. CJI has its first scheduled focus group in the northern region of the state in January. Outreach in other regions is ongoing. Information from these focus groups will be used to support the working group during the policy development phase of the process and will assist CJI in attaining greater stakeholder buy-in at all stages of the JRI Phase 1 process.
