The CJI team is involved in ongoing stakeholder engagement and relationship building throughout the state of New Mexico, to build confidence, trust, and participation across the state of New Mexico in the JRI phase 1 process. CJI has met periodically with members of Governor Grisham’s office as well as other legislators to plan the JRI process. CJI has also met with jail administrators, New Mexico Correctional Department leadership, the Legislative Finance Committee, the Interim Courts, Corrections and Justice committee, and New Mexico Sentencing Commission leadership to introduce the project and respond to any hesitation or skepticism regarding the project goals. In addition, CJI has met with advocacy groups, legislative staffers, and New Mexico Counties Association staff to begin the process of relationship building. This ongoing stakeholder engagement will lead to the development of champions across the state who can encourage greater stakeholder buy-in at all stages of the JRI Phase 1 process, including the system assessment, policy development, and legislative stages.
