The CJI team is conducting a comprehensive system assessment of the New Mexico criminal justice system, with a focus on both jails and prisons. The quantitative analysis portion of this assessment includes a review of publicly available jail and prison data as well as the collection and analysis of data from prisons and a sample of jails across the state. So far, the CJI team has met with a variety of jail administrators, the New Mexico Corrections Department, and the New Mexico Sentencing Commission to discuss criminal justice data trends and data sharing next steps. The New Mexico Sentencing Commission and New Mexico Corrections Department have signed a joint MOU as of December, which provides CJI with permission to begin the prison data extraction and collection process. The New Mexico Administrative Office of the Courts have also signed an MOU as of December, which will help facilitate the process of collecting court data. CJI will begin the data extraction process shortly. Information and findings from this system assessment will be used to support the working group during the policy development phase of the process. The team also anticipates including initial system assessment findings in the materials presented to the working group in our introductory presentation this summer.
