The CJI team has been involved in ongoing stakeholder engagement and relationship building throughout the state of Oklahoma, to build confidence, trust, and participation across the state of Oklahoma in the JRI phase 1 process. CJI has met periodically with members of Governor Stitt’s office as well as other legislators to plan the JRI process. In addition, CJI has met with law enforcement officials, policy advocates, county commissioners, pretrial service providers, social service providers, judges, attorneys, court staff and other system stakeholders in counties across the state to engage in relationship building. CJI has also devised questionnaires to engage with jail administrators, county commissioners, and victims across the state. The purpose of these questionnaires has been to assess the various policy priorities of key stakeholder groups; a summary of key takeaways from the questionnaires was distributed to task force members prior to the first policy development meeting. CJI staff have also traveled to a criminal justice-related conference in Tulsa, where they engaged in stakeholder management with legislators, task force members, and non-profit leaders. The team has been joining monthly coalition call meetings with criminal justice reform advocacy organizations to update them on the JRI process. CJI has also met with certain criminal justice policy organizations as well as several legislators to discuss the upcoming legislative agenda and interests in potential legislative sponsorship. Most recently, after drafting a finalized set of policy recommendations and key data findings in December, CJI met with several community advocacy organizations to review the data and recommendations with them. This ongoing stakeholder engagement has led to the development of champions across the state who can encourage greater stakeholder buy-in at all stages of the JRI Phase 1 process, including the system assessment, policy development, and legislative stages.
